Monitoring Mayhem to Observability Calm

Dave Maddox, VP Cloud Services, Daon

We've all been in that incident call. Logs in one place, metrics somewhere else, dashboards owned by different teams — and a lot of screenshots but no shared story. At Daon, a digital identity company securing over a billion identities globally, we lived that reality for years: from the plausible-deniability era of on-prem, through a DIY ELK stack that needed its own monitoring, to finally asking whether CloudWatch was really enough. (It wasn't.)

I've been at Daon for 24 years — when I started, AWS didn't exist, Datadog didn't exist, and "the cloud" was still weather. In this talk, I'll share how we moved from monitoring mayhem to observability calm, and why the shift wasn't just technical. It was cultural. Datadog gave us a map: metrics, logs, traces, and APM in one place so teams could stop piecing together clues and start asking better questions. Though fair warning — some of those knobs are attached to invoices.

If you're still sifting through raw logs and maintaining the telescope instead of looking through it, this one's for you.

Pay for What You Use, Use What You Pay For: Frugal Architecture with Datadog Cloud Costs

Apostolis Apostolidis, Lead Architect, Flipdish

We've all seen that Slack message. Someone senior forwards the monthly cloud bill with a single line: "Can someone take a look at this? Why has it spiked so much?" Nobody knows. Even worse, nobody owns it. And that's exactly the issue.

At Flipdish, we fixed that by bringing cloud and SaaS cost data into Datadog: the same tool our engineers already use for logs, metrics and traces. Now spend wasn't a finance report. It was a dashboard any engineer could pull up, attribute to a service, and act on like any other signal.

In this talk, I'll share what we found when we actually looked, how we embed cost awareness into architecture reviews and incident response, and why AI workloads are making this discipline urgent, where a single runaway prompt can spike your bill overnight in a way no latency alert would catch. If you can alert on a p99 spike, you can alert on a cost spike. Same signal. Different dimension.
